The joint replacement team says the question for a patient in their forties or fifties is not only whether to replace the hip, but when.
Thane, Maharashtra, India, 9 October 2026: Team Ortho Robotics, which performs hip replacement surgery in Thane at Kaushalya Medical Foundation Trust Hospital, has advised younger patients with hip arthritis or hip damage after trauma to plan the timing of surgery around the expected life of the implant, which many patients can expect to last at least 15 years.
Modern hip implants are designed to be durable, and a replacement gives most patients substantial relief from pain along with restored movement. For a patient in their seventies, a single replacement is likely to last the rest of their life. For someone in their forties or fifties, it raises the likelihood that a second, revision operation will be needed later, which is generally a more involved procedure than the first.
"Age alone should not keep anyone in pain. If a forty-five year old cannot walk to the station, we replace the hip," said Dr Sameep Sohoni, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Team Ortho Robotics. "But if the pain is still manageable with weight control, physiotherapy and medicines, waiting a few years can be the right call. We would rather have that conversation honestly in the first meeting than have the patient learn about revision surgery at sixty."
Where surgery goes ahead, the team uses minimally invasive technique, with smaller incisions, minimal blood loss and patients typically walking four to five hours after the operation, climbing stairs the next day and going home in two to four days.
The team, made up of Dr Kiran Bhavnani, Dr Jayesh Nayak and Dr Sameep Sohoni, has carried out more than 10,000 knee and hip replacement procedures together over twenty years.
