As AI agents become capable of using computers independently, Novastart is rethinking the traditional desktop with an infinite canvas where people, applications and AI agents can work together.
LOS ANGELES, CA, November 4, 2026 — For decades, personal computers have followed essentially the same design: one desktop, one mouse, one keyboard and a collection of overlapping windows. While artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved, the operating systems people use every day have remained largely unchanged.
Novastart, a Los Angeles-based software company, believes it's time for that to change.
The company is developing an operating system designed for a future where people work alongside AI agents that can independently navigate applications, interact with websites and complete tasks. Instead of treating AI as another chatbot or application, Novastart integrates AI agents directly into the operating-system experience, giving each agent its own mouse, keyboard and workspace.
At the center of Novastart is an infinite canvas that replaces the traditional desktop. Applications, documents, websites and AI agents exist together in one continuously expandable workspace, allowing users to organize their work without the limitations of a conventional screen.
"Computers were designed around the assumption that one person would be controlling everything," said Thomas Fraher, co-founder and CTO of Novastart. "But we're entering a world where people will have multiple AI agents working alongside them. We believe the operating system needs to evolve to support that."
The Traditional Desktop Wasn't Built for AI Agents
Today's AI agents are increasingly capable of performing tasks that previously required a person sitting in front of a computer. They can browse websites, enter information, navigate software and execute complex workflows.
But most traditional computer interfaces weren't designed for multiple independent operators.
When an AI agent uses a conventional desktop, it often takes control of the same mouse and keyboard the person needs. Other agent systems operate in separate virtual environments, where their activity may be difficult for users to follow.
Novastart approaches the problem at the operating-system level.
Each AI agent receives its own independent cursor and keyboard, allowing multiple agents to interact with different applications simultaneously. The user retains control of their own mouse and keyboard throughout the process.
Novastart supports up to 10 concurrent AI agents, with a lead agent capable of dividing larger tasks among multiple helpers.
For example, a user could ask an AI agent to research competitors, organize findings into a spreadsheet and prepare a presentation. Rather than completing every step sequentially, different agents can work on separate parts of the assignment at the same time.
All of their activity remains visible on the user's canvas.
An Infinite Canvas Instead of a Traditional Desktop
Novastart also challenges another longstanding limitation of personal computers: the desktop itself.
Traditional operating systems confine applications to a finite screen, forcing users to constantly minimize windows, switch between desktops and search through open programs.
Novastart replaces that environment with an infinite, pannable and zoomable canvas.
Users can position applications anywhere, arrange related windows into workspaces and zoom out to see their projects together. Canvases preserve their layouts, allowing users to return to work exactly where they left off.
The approach is designed to make the computer feel less like a stack of overlapping windows and more like a large, organized workspace.
"Your entire computer should be an infinite canvas," said Fraher. "You should be able to spread out your work, see how everything connects and move between projects without constantly rearranging windows."
The canvas also provides a shared environment for humans and AI agents. Instead of AI operating in a separate interface, agents work directly alongside the applications and information the user already has open.
AI Agents That Work in Plain Sight
As AI systems gain the ability to take actions independently, Novastart believes visibility and user control will become increasingly important.
The operating system makes agent activity visible through individually labeled cursors and application windows.
Users can watch agents navigate websites, enter information and interact with applications in real time. They can also interrupt an agent, correct its actions or take control of a window when necessary.
This creates an environment where AI agents can work autonomously without requiring users to surrender control of their computers.
"We don't think people should have to choose between letting AI work independently and knowing what it's doing," Fraher said. "The goal is to make AI agents useful, visible and easy to control."
Unlike systems that isolate AI activity in hidden environments, Novastart places computer-use agents directly within the same operating-system session as the user.
The company sees this architecture as an important foundation for the next generation of AI-powered computing.
A Shared Computer for People and AI
Novastart's vision extends beyond individual users and their AI agents.
The operating system also allows multiple people to collaborate inside the same computing environment, even when they're using different computers.
Teammates can join shared canvases, view application windows and interact directly with the same software. Windows can stream between computers, allowing team members to work together without relying entirely on screen sharing or exchanging files.
Each participant maintains independent input controls, making it possible for several people and AI agents to work simultaneously.
For example, a team could collaborate on a project while AI agents conduct research, update documents or perform other supporting tasks in separate windows.
Rather than switching between individual productivity applications, remote-desktop tools and AI assistants, Novastart aims to bring these experiences into one operating system.
Rethinking the Future of Personal Computing
The emergence of computer-use AI agents raises a fundamental question: What should an operating system look like when a computer is no longer operated by just one person?
Novastart's answer is an environment that supports multiple independent operators, an unlimited workspace and real-time collaboration.
The company believes these capabilities could eventually become as fundamental to personal computing as windows, icons and the mouse are today.
Novastart currently supports more than 30 web applications as standalone windows, including Chrome, Claude, ChatGPT, Gmail, Excel, WhatsApp and Notion.
Rather than requiring people to abandon familiar software, the operating system is designed to give existing applications a different environment in which to operate.
"We're not trying to replace the applications people already love," said Fraher. "We're rethinking the space where those applications live, how people interact with them and how AI agents can work alongside us."
Availability
Novastart is available at novastart.com with Free, Pro and Team plans.
The software can be used in two ways:
- Novastart App: Runs the Novastart operating-system environment inside a window on Windows 10 or 11 and Intel-based Macs.
- Novastart OS: Installs directly as an operating system on Intel and other x86 PCs using a USB drive, with installation typically taking approximately 8 to 15 minutes.
