Replace Now or Wait for Spring? Silverback Torch-On Systems Shares Winter Roof Replacement Guidance for Edmonton Businesses

Should Edmonton businesses replace a failing flat roof in winter or wait for spring? Silverback Torch-On Systems shares practical guidance and a planning timeline.

With winter approaching, Silverback Torch-On Systems is sharing guidance for Edmonton commercial property owners deciding whether to replace a failing flat roof now, patch it through the season, or plan for spring.

The company says the question comes up every fall as owners face recurring leaks and shortening days. Commercial flat roof replacement in winter is possible in some cases, but it depends on the roofing system, the weather window, manufacturer temperature limits and a dry roof deck.

“Winter roof replacement isn’t impossible, but it isn’t automatically the right answer either,” said a spokesperson for Silverback Torch-On Systems. “SBS torch-on systems handle cold-weather work better than adhesive-based systems because they’re heat-applied. Even so, every manufacturer sets its own rules, and owners need written confirmation that winter work won’t affect their warranty.”

According to the company’s new guide, winter replacement makes the most sense when leaks are spreading, repairs no longer hold, water is damaging inventory or tenant spaces, or an inspection finds widespread wet insulation. When leaks are limited and the roof is still mostly sound, a temporary repair followed by a spring replacement usually offers better pricing, more system choices and fewer weather risks.

For winter projects, the company outlines practices owners should expect from experienced crews:

Heated storage that keeps roofing rolls flexible
Careful snow and ice removal before tear-off
Replacing only sections that can be made watertight the same day
Confirming the deck and insulation are dry before covering them
Strict fall protection and torch fire-safety procedures on icy roofs

The company also encourages owners to use the winter months for planning, even if the work waits until spring. Its recommended timeline includes inspections in October and November, quotes and budgeting from December to February, booking spring installation slots by March and April, and installation between May and September.

“Owners who plan in winter get earlier start dates and more time to compare quotes,” the spokesperson added.
