Physician with Nearly 30 Years of Practice Argues That Modern Medicine Is Missing a Vital Piece of the Healing Process

Christopher Kolker, M.D., a physician with nearly three decades of clinical experience, announces the release of his new book, Christian Medicine, a candid examination of what he sees as one of modern healthcare's most overlooked blind spots: the role of faith in physical healing.

Drawing on years at the bedside, Dr. Kolker argues that while medical science has made extraordinary progress, it has too often left patients "cured" but not truly well. Many patients, he writes, leave the doctor's office with normal test results and a clean bill of health, yet continue to feel that something essential is missing from their care.

"Patients are not merely collections of symptoms or diagnoses," Dr. Kolker said. "They are individuals with stories, families, fears, and dreams. The heart of medicine must be the recognition of this shared humanity."

Christian Medicine traces how a culture of caution around discussing faith has taken hold in medical training, where students are often discouraged from acknowledging spirituality's role in a patient's health for fear of seeming inappropriate. Dr. Kolker contends that this silence has come at a cost, pointing to research published in journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and the American Journal of Public Health linking a strong spiritual life to lower mortality, reduced heart disease, and better mental health outcomes.

The book draws on real patient encounters from Dr. Kolker's career, including the story of a terminally ill cancer patient whose quiet faith and peace in her final weeks left a lasting impression on the medical team caring for her and helped shape the book's central argument: that faith and medicine are not in conflict, but belong together in the pursuit of genuine healing.

Spanning topics including spirituality, prayer, pain and suffering, psychiatric care, cancer, and end-of-life medicine, Christian Medicine is written for patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers alike who sense there is more to healing than what a lab report or scan can measure.

Christian Medicine is now available pre-order on Amazon.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Christopher Kolker, M.D. has spent nearly thirty years practicing medicine, caring for patients through some of the most difficult chapters of their lives, chronic pain, serious illness, and the search for hope in the face of a difficult diagnosis. Over his career, he has come to believe that true healing extends beyond what can be measured in a lab or seen on a scan, and that faith has a legitimate, often overlooked place in the practice of medicine.
Christian Medicine grew out of decades of bedside experience and the countless patients whose stories challenged him to look beyond protocol and prescription toward a more complete understanding of what it means to heal. Dr. Kolker writes not as a theologian, but as a physician who has watched faith change the course of his patients' suffering and who believes medicine's greatest advances still leave room for something science alone cannot provide.
Dr. Kolker lives with his wife, Hai, and their two sons, Joseph and Christian, whose steadfast faith he credits as a daily source of inspiration for his own walk with God.
