The unit reports patients walking within four to five hours of surgery and hospital stays of two to four days.
Thane, Maharashtra, India, 5 September 2026: Team Ortho Robotics performs hip replacement surgery through minimally invasive technique at Kaushalya Medical Foundation Trust Hospital in Thane, where its published recovery pathway has patients walking four to five hours after surgery, climbing stairs from the following day, and discharged within two to four days.
The programme is run by three orthopaedic surgeons, Dr Kiran Bhavnani, Dr Jayesh Nayak and Dr Sameep Sohoni, who between them have performed more than 10,000 knee and hip joint replacement procedures over the last twenty years.
"The thing that stops people having a hip done is not the surgery, it is the picture in their head of six weeks in bed afterwards," said Dr Jayesh Nayak, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Team Ortho Robotics. "When someone stands up the same evening, that picture goes, and the rehab actually gets done."
The minimally invasive approach the unit uses is associated with minimal blood loss during surgery, no requirement for blood transfusion, reduced physiotherapy and antibiotic load, and stitchless closure. The unit says the shorter stay is a consequence of the technique rather than a discharge target, and that patients are kept as long as their recovery requires.
Team Ortho Robotics also runs a patient tracking programme it calls Smartsheet GPT, which follows each patient from the outpatient consultation through admission, inpatient stay, discharge and recovery, so that every stage is recorded against the same file rather than handed between departments.
