Unpacking the Why: BIEDAW 2024 Spotlights Eating Disorder Roots

National campaign led by Butterfly Foundation and allies urges empathetic dialogue, early help-seeking, and policy action during Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week, 1–7 September 2024.

As Australia observes Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week (BIEDAW) from 1–7 September 2024, the Butterfly Foundation and the Eating Disorder Alliance are centring this year's theme, "Unpacking the Why," to shift public understanding beyond appearance-focused narratives toward the complex biological, psychological, and social drivers of eating disorders. The campaign calls for compassionate conversations, reduced stigma, and improved access to evidence-based care for the estimated 1.1 million Australians affected.

BIEDAW is a coordinated national effort led by the Eating Disorder Alliance, including Butterfly Foundation, the Australia and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED), Eating Disorders Victoria, Eating Disorders Queensland, and Eating Disorders Families Australia. Activities across the week include free online webinars on media literacy and body image, community storytelling initiatives featuring lived-experience advocates, and targeted outreach to schools, workplaces, and health services to normalise help-seeking. The Butterfly National Helpline (1800 ED HOPE) remains available seven days a week, offering confidential counselling, referral, and support for individuals, carers, and clinicians.

Data underscore the urgency: eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, yet significant barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment persist, particularly for men, gender-diverse people, and regional communities. In response, Butterfly has expanded prevention and early-intervention programs, including partnerships such as "The Changing Room" with the Liptember Foundation to address body image across the lifespan, and advocacy for sustained federal funding through the Eating Disorder Alliance. Recent initiatives also include a focused campaign on eating disorders in men and boys, challenging stereotypes that frame disordered eating as solely a women's issue.

MLA Psychology (https://www.mlapsychology.com/), a multidisciplinary mental telehealth clinic, aligns with BIEDAW's objectives by delivering compassionate, evidence-based care for body image concerns and eating disorders. The clinic's integrated approach—combining psychological assessment, trauma-informed therapy, and coordinated care with medical and nutritional professionals—reflects best-practice guidelines emphasising early intervention and holistic support. MLA Psychology encourages individuals and families to utilise BIEDAW resources, including Butterfly's helpline and webinar series, to initiate conversations and access timely support.
