MELBOURNE, VIC — MEA Shopfitting has confirmed a formal commitment to incorporating sustainable materials and construction practices as a standard part of every commercial fit-out it delivers, rather than treating environmental considerations as a premium add-on reserved for clients who specifically request it.

The move reflects a broader shift the company has observed among Melbourne and regional Victorian business owners, who are increasingly asking about the environmental impact of their fit-out alongside the usual considerations of cost, timeline and design.

"A few years ago, sustainability was something we'd occasionally get asked about toward the end of a design conversation," said a spokesperson for MEA Shopfitting. "We're not asking clients to pay a premium for this — in a lot of cases, sustainable choices like LED lighting or reusing existing elements of a space actually reduce cost, not increase it," the spokesperson said. "Our approach is to make the sustainable option the default one, and let clients opt out if they have a specific reason to, rather than the other way around."
