Primo Car Removal Sydney outlines the Service NSW steps for owners disposing of a registered vehicle, including when a notice of disposal applies and when registration must be cancelled instead.

ST MARYS, NSW – Primo Car Removal Sydney, a vehicle recycling business based in St Marys, New South Wales, has published an outline of the paperwork that registered owners in the state need to complete when they sell or dispose of an unwanted vehicle. The summary draws on guidance from Service NSW and is intended to clarify which step applies in which situation.
Owners must submit a notice of disposal when they sell or dispose of a NSW-registered vehicle, which includes cars, motorcycles and trailers, and the notice informs Transport for NSW of the change. Service NSW advises that the notice should be submitted immediately after the sale. The notice can be lodged online or on a paper form, and owners are advised to keep a copy for their records. The full process is set out in the Service NSW guidance.
A separate rule applies when a vehicle is sold to a wrecker. A notice of disposal is required only if the vehicle is sold to a wrecker with its number plates attached. If the vehicle is sold to a wrecker without number plates, no notice of disposal is needed, but the registration must be cancelled. Any number plates removed from the vehicle must be returned to a Service NSW service centre.
Owners with personalised or special plates have additional options. Service NSW advises replacing them with a set of general plates before the sale and keeping the special plates, or exchanging them onto another vehicle registered in the owner's name.
Other administrative steps are commonly recommended after a vehicle leaves the owner's possession. Service NSW also advises sellers to remove the vehicle's registration number from their toll account and to contact their comprehensive insurer where applicable.
A company spokesperson said the paperwork is often the part of a vehicle sale that owners know least about. "Many people are unsure whether they need to lodge a notice of disposal or cancel the registration, and the answer depends on whether the plates stay on the vehicle," the spokesperson said. "Service NSW is the authority on these requirements, and owners should confirm the current rules with it before they act."
Vehicles that reach the end of their working life in Australia are generally dismantled so that steel, other metals, usable parts and fluids can be recovered. Facilities that handle vehicle waste in New South Wales are subject to environmental regulation, and requirements differ between states and territories. Owners who are unsure which process applies to their circumstances can contact Service NSW directly.
